The following trails Abiy Ahmed as he rose from a young boy with humble beginnings to become an extremely influential and revolutionizing leader of a proud and economically booming hundred million strong nation. It is here in a small rural town with a population of around 5, people called Beshasha that Abiy Ahmed was brought into this life.
He was born August 15,a mere two years after the overthrow of the Ethiopian Monarchy and the seizure of power by the Derg military regime. For an outsider passing through, Beshasha looks like a normal rural community with smiling and hospitable people living a life far from the frenzied and hectic way common in the larger cities of Ethiopia.
“Medemer” by Abiy Ahmed, Ph.D., An Interpretive Book Review in Two Parts (Part I)
Fortunately for its citizens, the town is endowed with two major agricultural commodities: khat chat a mild stimulant and coffee. Oddly enough, even with the resources attained through the sale of these very important products in the Ethiopian economy, Beshasha remains a town with relatively few modern infrastructure.
Basic necessities such as roads and electricity are an issue of contention within the town, as they have yet to receive the full attention from the relevant government authorities.
Only 17 km from Beshasha is the town of Agaro km from Addis Ababa which is slightly larger and offers more opportunities for the youth. Most young men from Beshasha aspire to open a business in the nearby town of Agaro and become the next rich and successful coffee trader. Abiy Ahmed was different. According to various reliable sources, Ahmed Ali who also goes by the names of Aba Dabes and Aba Fita has countless times helped the town in its times of need.
He has even gone as far as donating his own land for crucial services needed by the community such as telecommunication, medical, and educational facilities. Abiy has stated time and time again how influential his beloved mother was throughout his childhood and they obviously shared a close and fruitful relationship. Abiy Ahmed's eldest sister Tiruye Ahmed, recalls how Abiy was a role model to his friends and was always encouraging them to take studying and learning seriously.Winbond chip bios
She goes on to state that, while the other children had common dreams such as moving to Agaro to become rich coffee traders, Abiy had no such inclination. He continued his pursuit of enlightenment by enrolling at Beshasha Primary School, where he began his formal education. Abiy studied there till the 6th grade and left to continue with his schooling in the nearby town of Agaro and their secondary schools.
It is believed that the loss of his brother shook him to his core causing him to reevaluate the path his life was taking.
The OPDO was seen by some as a peaceful alternative and this is more than likely the reason why Abiy Ahmed chose to join them at such a young age. Some might say he was looking for a way to end the violence and find peaceful methods of resolving the conflicts plaguing the country. The OPDO at the time was made up of a very small number of soldiers and members, somewhere around onlywhile the TPLF had soldiers upwards of 90, men and the rest of the coalition making up the remaining 10,The latest in the series of public addresses will be today, where he will address tens of thousands of mostly youth crowd at the Millennium Hall in Addis Abeba.
Yet, he has something to throw to each crowd, depending on where he speaks, gossip observed. To his luck, Abiy has a warmed up public, eager to cheer and delighted to get electrified, claims gossip. Not even leaders of the opposition and advocates of civil society causes were able to resist their temptation to grant him a standing ovation when he met them in the Jubilee Palace on Thursday night, over a state dinner, observed gossip.
On Monday, he will address members of the business community at the Sheraton before shuttling to Gonder, an epicentre of protest in the north-west, the following day. On next weekend, he will be in Bahir Dar, opening the Tana Forum, an annual regional summit discussing mostly on security and economic policy matters.
On the surface, facing the public it may appear as an attempt by Prime Minister Abiy in pacifying a rebellious population that has been at odds with the Revolutionary Democrats over the past three years, says gossip.
Nonetheless, it could also be the beginning of an era where a new style of leadership emerges where the chairman of the ruling party and a leader of the nation earns his political capital directly from the public, overcoming limitations imposed by party structures and the parliamentary system, claims gossip. Abiy is evolving to be presidential in his leadership than any of his predecessors have ever dreamt of, gossip claims.
It will not be without fierce opposition from those within his ruling party, gossip foresees. It is too early to tell those who may ally with him although his recent public appearances give a clue.
Ironically, the person who could have been the source remains unidentified despite a couple of names still flying around, says gossip. Abraham Tekeste PhDthe finance minister, had criticised Abiy as a recreant, to which Lemma rebuked him saying look who is talking, gossip revealed. It appears that many of the veteran EPRDFites have simply held their breath, for now, gossip observed. Politicians, activists and media outlets continue to deconstruct old narratives and perpetuate new grievances. Nobody, however, is as busy reconstructing a new, inclusive story. The already extremely fragile political condition cannot handle any further instability and chaos.
